COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL PROGRESSION

COMPUTER PROCESSING OF SIGNAL PROGRESSIONS ARE BEING USED TO SET THE TIMING OF URBAN AND METROPOLITAN TRAFFIC SIGNALS FOR OPTIMUM VEHICLE FLOW. A NEW SET OF DIGITAL COMPUTER INSTRUCTIONS IS NOW BEING USED WHICH ENABLES TRAFFIC ENGINEERS TO DERIVE EITHER AN OPTIMUM OFF-LINE DESIGN OF SIGNAL PROGRESSION FOR FIXED-TIME CONTROL, OR ON-LINE COMPUTATION OF CONTROL VARIABLES, FOR INSTANT RESPONSE TO CHANGES IN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. THESE INSTRUCTIONS, WRITTEN IN THE FORTRAN LANGUAGE, INVOLVE THE USE OF CONVENTIONAL MATHEMATICAL TECHNIQUES SELECTED TO OBTAIN LINEAR FIXED SPEED THROUGH BANDS FOR GIVEN VOLUME REQUIREMENTS AND WITHIN GIVEN LIMITS OF SPEED AND CYCLE TIMES. ALTERNATIVE TECHNIQUES FOR OFFSET COMPUTATION WITH THREE-PHASE DESIGN CAPABILITY ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM. VARIABLES INCLUDE TRAFFIC FLOW, TRAFFIC SIGNAL SETTINGS, THE MOTORING PUBLIC, ROAD CONDITIONS, WEATHER CONDITIONS, SPECIAL PRIORITIES, ROAD CAPACITIES, AND SIGNAL STATUS TIME.
