FUNCTIONAL AND OPERATIONAL TESTING OF NOISE ABSORBING PROTECTING WALLS ALONG AN AUTOBAHN /IN GERMAN/

THE CONSTRUCTION OF A WALL ALONG THE ROAD IS ONE OF THE POSSIBLE MEASURES TO PROTECT A RESIDENTIAL AREA FROM TRAFFIC NOISE. IF SUCH WALLS ARE BUILT WITH MATERIALS HAVING A NON POROUS SURFACE, E.G. IN THE FORM OF CONCRETE OR BRICK WALLS, THE STRIKING SOUND ENERGY IS REFLECTED. THUS, AN INCREASE IN THE NOISE LEVEL CAN OCCUR IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS LOCATED ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IN ORDER TO AVOID THE OCCURRENCE OF SUCH PHENOMENA, IT IS ADVANTAGEOUS TO PROVIDE FOR NOISE ABSORBING PROTECTIVE WALLS IN THESE CASES. RESEARCH GOALS, THEORTICAL AND PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES, CONSTRUCTION AND INITIAL TEST RESULTS ARE DESCRIBED. THE NOISE LEVEL REDUCTION ACHIEVED BY THE 4 M HIGH PROTECTIVE WALL IS 11 DB (A) AT A DISTANCE OF 50 M; AT THE SAME TIME THE "LEVEL FLUCTUATION" IS CONSIDERABLY DECREASED. /AUTHOR/
