CHLORPROMAZINE AND ETHANOL COMBINATION: EFFECTS ON RESPIRATION, RANDOM MOTOR ACTIVITY AND CONDITIONED AVOIDANCE ESCAPE IN MICE

THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF CHLORPROMAZINE AND ETHANOL ON (1) RESPIRATORY RATE, AS INDICATIVE OF GENERAL DEPRESSION OF THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM, (2) MOTOR ACTIVITY, AS A MEASURE OF NEUROMUSCULAR COORDINATION, AND (3) BLOCKADE OF A CONDITIONED AVOIDANCE-ESCAPE RESPONSE AS A MONITOR OF EXISTING ANXIETY LEVELS WERE EXAMINED USING MICE. THE STUDY IS RELEVANT TO THE QUESTION OF POSSIBLE DANGEROUS SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS WHEN MORE THAN MINIMAL AMOUNTS OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE DRUNK BY PERSONS UNDER TREATMENT WITH TRANQUILIZERS. THE RESULTS CLEARLY SHOW A SYNERGISTIC ACTION OF CHLORPROMAZINE AND ETHANOL IN BOTH RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION AND BLOCKAGE OF A CONDITIONED AVOIDANCE-ESCAPE RESPONSE. /HSL/
