OPERATIONS RESEARCH ON DRIVER BEHAVIOR

AN OPERATIONS RESEARCH METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR THE STUDY OF DRIVER BEHAVIOR, AND RELATING THEORY TO THE ACTUAL DRIVING TASK. THE METHOD IS BASED ON THE PROBABILITY OF SITUATIONS OCCURRING IN A LOGICAL SEQUENCE. EVENTS, OBSERVATIONS AND OTHER SITUATIONS ARE DEFINED AND METHODS DESCRIBED OF MEASURING THEIR VALUES. TEST DATA FROM ACTUAL DRIVING SITUATIONS ARE REVIEWED WHICH DEMONSTRATE THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ON DRIVER BEHAVIOR. TESTS OF SEVERAL TYPES OF DRIVERS ARE DESCRIBED. DATA FROM THESE TESTS SHOULD BE USEFUL IN EVALUATING VARIOUS TYPES OF DRIVING SIMULATORS AND PROVIDING A BASIS FOR SIMULATOR PROGRAMS THROUGH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE DRIVING TEST AND DRIVER BEHAVIOR.
