NEW YORK STATE SAFETY SEDAN READY FOR TAKERS
PHASE II OF THE NEW YORK STATE SAFETY CAR PROGRAM, THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOTYPE SAFETY CAR, WAS RECENTLY COMPLETED. THE PROTOTYPE DESIGN IS THE RESULT OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, RATHER THAN THE TRADITIONAL EMPIRICAL APPROACH. FIVE DIFFERENT CONCEPTS WERE DERIVED FROM PHASE I FEASIBILITY STUDY. THE OPTIMIZED CONFIGURATION HAS BEEN NAMED THE NEW YORK STATE SAFETY SEDAN. DESIGN FEATURES INCLUDE: FOUR WHEEL DRIVE, PERISCOPE REAR VIEW SYSTEM, AIRCRAFT PRINCIPLES OF BODY DESIGN, SIDE IMPACT AND ROLLOVER INTEGRITY, AND A HYDRAULIC FRONT BUMPER WHICH EXTENDS AUTOMATICALLY AT A CERTAIN (37 MPH) SPEED. THE SEDAN SEATS FOUR PASSENGERS. (CAPACITY WAS LIMITED PRIMARILY TO MEET THE SIDE-IMPACT PROTECTION REQUIREMENT OF 40 MPH BY A VEHICLE WEIGHING ABOUT 4000 LB., WHICH IS THE WEIGHT OF THE SAFETY SEDAN UNLOADED.)
