STRENGTH OF USED SEATBELTS

AUTOMOBILE SEATBELTS ARE WEAKENED NOT ONLY BY REPEATED ADJUSTMENT AND USE, BUT ALSO BY THE MERE PASSAGE OF TIME AFTER INSTALLATION. ENGINEERS OF THE OFFICE OF VEHICLE SYSTEMS RESEARCH (NOW THE D. O. T. SAFETY SYSTEMS LABORATORY) FOUND 68% OF THE WELL USED, 3-TO 10-YEAR-OLD SEATBELTS THEY TESTED TO BE UNSAFE, BASED ON PRESENT FEDERAL STANDARDS FOR SEATBELTS. THEY RECOMMEND ROUTINE TESTING OF SEATBELT WEBBING BY AN EASILY USED ABRASION GAGE AT SAFETY INSPECTION LANES, AND REPLACEMENT OF WEAK BELTS AND ALL SEATBELTS MANUFACTURED BEFORE 1964. /AUTHOR/
