Birdbrain Scheme, or the Big Idea of the Century?
In this article, the author argues that sustainability initiatives are often merely “greenwashing” or “sustainability lite.” That is, they are mainly superficial efforts and marketing campaigns that do not have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions. For example, it is more important from a sustainability standpoint that a building be accessible through nonmotorized and public transportation rather than being simply LEED-certified. True sustainability requires a holistic approach that encompasses community involvement and a love of place. All three elements of sustainability (economic development, environmental protection and social equity) must also be addressed.
