AN EXPANDED CYBERNETIC MODEL FOR ANALYZING DRIVER BEHAVIOUR

AN ANALYSIS IS MADE OF HUMAN PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND THE EFFECT OF THESE UPON THE DRIVER-VEHICLE-HIGHWAY-ENVIRONMENT SITUATION. IN ORDER TO DISPLAY THIS COMPLEX SITUATION EFFECTIVELY, A CONCEPTUAL MODEL IS PRESENTED. THIS MODEL IS BASED UPON BASIC THEORIES OF PSYCHOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY, INFORMATION PROCESSING AND SERVOMECHANISMS. MAN'S ABILITY TO GATHER AND PROCESS INFORMATION, MAKE A DECISION, AND ACTUATE THE CONTROLS OF A VEHICLE IN A HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION ENVIRONMENT IS EXAMINED. UNDER CONDITIONS DEMANDING SUSTAINED PERFORMANCE MAN'S LIMIT OF ONE CYCLE PER SECOND OPENS TO QUESTION HIS ABILITY AS A HIGHWAY USER. UNDER BEST AVERAGE CONDITIONS HIS REACTION TIME IS OF THE ORDER OF HALF A SECOND. THE DEGRADING EFFECT OF A VARIETY OF PATHOLOGICAL STATES ON MAN'S PERFORMANCE IS ALSO ANALYZED. LIMITATIONS ADDED BY THE OTHER FACTORS IN THE SYSTEM ARE CONSIDERED. SEVERAL CRITERIA FOR SAFE CONTROL AND TRANSPORTATION ARE INCLUDED. /TRRL/
