THE USE OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS WITH A VIEW TO IMPROVING THE OPERATION OF SURFACE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

TO MAKE A DETAILED AND COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE VARIOUS SYSTEMS IN USE OR BEING PLANNED FOR CONTROLLING AND MONITORING THE MOVEMENT OF MOTORBUSES BY LARGE TRANSPORT ORGANIZATIONS, A SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED AMONG THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE COMPANIES, WHO WERE ASKED TO GIVE DETAILS ABOUT THEIR OPERATION MONITORING METHODS. THE ORGANIZATIONS WERE GROUPED INTO THOSE WHICH CARRIED AN AVERAGE DAILY NUMBER OF PEOPLE LESS THAN 100,000, THOSE WHICH CARRIED BETWEEN 100,000 AND 500,000 PEOPLE AND THOSE WHICH CARRIED MORE THAN 500,000 PEOPLE. THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEMS USED AND THEIR MAIN CHARACTERISTICS ARE DESCRIBED. THE MOTOROLA SYSTEM IN CHICAGO, THE MARCONI SYSTEM AND THE BUS ELECTRONIC SCANNING INDICATOR SYSTEM (BESI) IN LONDON, THE SECAMA SYSTEM IN PARIS AND THE LIMITED AND COMPLETE SYSTEMS IN ZURICH ARE DESCRIBED. ROUTES, TIMETABLES SUPERVISION OF REGULARITY AND DATA PROCESSING ARE DISCUSSED AND ECONOMIC FACTORS SUCH AS COSTS OF ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEMS ARE CONSIDERED. THE COSTS OF THE VARIOUS SYSTEMS ARE COMPARED AND COMMENTS ARE MADE ON THE AMORTIZATION OF THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEMS. TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS HOWEVER, WILL HAVE ONLY A LIMITED EFFECT IF THEY ARE NOT ACCOMPANIED BY PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT. THE VAST AMOUNT OF INFORMATION ON TRAFFIC CONDITIONS GATHERED BY ELECTRONIC MEANS, WILL FACILITATE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PRIORITY MEASURES FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT. OTHER ADVANTAGES IN THE USE OF ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEMS SUCH AS THE ACQUISITION OF INSTANTANEOUS INFORMATION ON TRAFFIC INCIDENTS, FACILITATION OF ROUTE SUPERVISION, THE ENABLING OF FAR RANGING STUDIES OF DEMAND, AUTOMATIC TIMETABLE PLANNING, PROFITABILITY STUDIES AND VEHICLE MAINTENANCE STUDIES ARE DETAILED.
