URBAN CORRIDOR DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM; INTERSTATE 495, EXCLUSIVE BUS LANE

THE LAST IN A SERIES OF REPORTS ABOUT THE EXCLUSIVE LANE FOR BUSES TRAVELING EAST OVER I-495 FROM THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE TO THE LINCOLN TUNNEL DETAILS THE OVERALL SUCCESS OF THIS EXPERIMENT. OPENED IN DECEMBER 1970, AFTER A SEQUENCE OF STUDIES AND TESTING DATING BACK TO 1963, BY 1971 ALONE, MORE THAN 8.7 MILLION PASSENGERS IN 206,000 BUSES HAD SAVED AN AVERAGE OF 10-25 MINUTES APIECE IN THEIR MORNING TRIPS INTO NEW YORK CITY.
