AMBULANCE SERVICES AND HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS; DIGEST OF SURVEYS CONDUCTED 1965 TO MARCH 1971

A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED OF THE STATUS OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE SYSTEMS IN THE UNITED STATES BASED ON A REVIEW OF 37 STATEWIDE SURVEYS OF COMMUNITY AMBULANCE SERVICES AND 21 STATEWIDE SURVEYS OF HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS. A DIGEST OF EACH STATE SURVEY AND OF FOUR SELECTED AREA SURVEYS -- BALTIMORE, CHICAGO, DETROIT, AND MARICOPA/GILA COUNTIES (ARIZONA) ARE GIVEN. EACH DIGEST IS COMPOSED OF FOUR MAIN AREAS: TITLE AND DATE OF THE REPORT; METHOD USED TO COLLECT THE INFORMATION; SELECTED STATISTICS; AND CONTENT. THE SUMMARY AND DIGESTS WILL HELP COMMUNITY PLANNING AND TRAINING ORGANIZATIONS TO: (1) OBTAIN INSIGHT ON DEVELOPING TRENDS IN THE VARIOUS ELEMENTS OF THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE SYSTEMM; (2) COMPARE THEIR OPERATION WITH STATEWIDE OPERATIONS, AND (3) ESTABLISH A BASELINE FOR PLANNING IMPROVEMENTS. /HSRI/
