A SYSTEM FOR MEASURING AND MARKING NO-PASSING ZONE LIMITS. MAY 4-7, 1969

A SYSTEM FOR DETERMINING THE PROPER PASS/NO PASS ZONES ON TWO-LANE RURAL HIGHWAYS IS DESCRIBED. THE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF TWO PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A SIGHT DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICE, AN OPERATOR CONSOLE, PAINT CODE COMPUTER, AND PAINT SPRAY EQUIPMENT. A RADIO DISTANCE MEASURING SYSTEM IS MOUNTED IN THE TWO TRUCKS TO MONITOR THE SPACING BETWEEN THE TRUCKS AS THEY TRAVEL (15-25 MPH) ALONG A HIGHWAY TO BE MARKED. THE OUTPUT OF THE MEASURING SYSTEM PROVIDED INFORMATION TO THE OPERATOR OF THE SECOND TRUCK TO MAINTAIN THE SPACING AT THE SELECTED MINIMUM SAFE PASSING SIGHT DISTANCE. A FLASHING LIGHT MOUNTED ON THE LEADING TRUCK IS THE TARGET FOR DETERMINING WHEN THE TRUCK IS NOT IN SIGHT. A SECOND OPERATOR IN THE TRAILING TRUCK CAUSES MARKS TO BE PAINTED ON THE PAVEMENT WHEN THE LEADING VEHICLE DISAPPEARS FROM VIEW, AND AGAIN WHEN IT REAPPEARS. THESE MARKS ARE USED LATER BY THE PAINT TRUCK CREWS TO MARK THE APPROPRIATE STRIPES ON THE ROAD SURFACE.
