AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS

THE REPORT PRESENTS A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE CURRENT STATE OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTROL OF TRAFFIC AT SINGLE INTERSECTIONS AND IN COMPLETE NETWORKS. THE PERFORMANCE OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEMS IS EVALUATED (CHAPTER I). CONTROL STRATEGIES ARE DETAILED AND ANALYSED (CHAPTER II). THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION OF A NUMBER OF CONTROL INSTALLATIONS ARE TABULATED (CHAPTER III), AND A SUMMARIZED ASSESSMENT OF CONTROL EQUIPMENT IS PRESENTED (CHAPTER V). THE TECHNIQUE OF TRAFFIC SIMULATION IS DISCUSSED AND ITS IMPORTANCE EMPHASIZED (CHAPTER IV). IN CONCLUSION, THE REPORT RECOMMENDS THE ADOPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AREA TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEMS, WHICH, EVEN AT THE PRESENT STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT, OFFER SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS, ESPECIALLY FROM THE COST-BENEFIT VIEWPOINT. FINALLY, SPECIFIC PROPOSALS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ARE STATED AND THE NEED FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION URGED. /HSRI/
