A TECHNIQUE FOR MEASURING "EFFECTIVE" ROAD PROFILES

A METHOD OF MEASURING THE "EFFECTIVE" PROFILE OF ROAD SURFACES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. THIS METHOD IS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO ENGINEERS INVOLVED IN THE STUDY OF VEHICLE RIDE AND VIBRATION PHENOMENA ON LABORATORY ROAD SIMULATORS, BECAUSE, THE MEASURED ROAD PROFILES INCLUDE THE EFFECTS OF TIRE ENVELOPING, THEREBY ELIMINATING THE NEED TO SIMULATE THEM. FURTHERMORE, THE ROAD PROFILING INSTRUMENTATION CAN BE ADAPTED TO ANY VEHICLE WHICH FACILITATES SIMULATOR TO ROAD CORRELATION STUDIES. /HSL/
