TRAFFIC STRIPES AND FORMED-IN-PLACE DELINEATORS

INCLUDED IN THIS PROJECT ARE VISUAL, PHOTOGRAPHIC, AND TELEPHOTOMETRIC EVALUATIONS OF SEVERAL PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS OF PAINT STRIPES AS WELL AS TWO RECESSED REFLECTIVE DELINEATORS DESIGNED TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS. SANDBLASTING OF THE PAVEMENT BEFORE PAINTING RESULTED IN TREMEDOUS IMPROVEMENTS IN THE WET-NIGHT VISIBILITY OF THE STRIPS. A THIN PLANT-MIX-SEAL BARRIER PLACED BETWEEN THE CONCRETE SURFACE AND THE PAINT STRIPE FAILED TO PRODUCE ANY APPRECIABLE IMPROVEMENTS, BUT A SLIGHTLY RICH MIX CAUSED SOME BLEEDING OF THE ASPHALT, CASTING DOUBT ON THE RESULTS. A GILSABIND BARRIER SHOWED IMMEDIATE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON VISIBILITY. STANDARD HIGHWAY BEADS IMBEDDED IN WHITE EPOXY "DOTS" PROVED TO BE A TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE ARRANGEMENT. A REFLECTOR PLACED AT THE BOTTOM OF A RECESSED RAMP SUFFERED A RAPID LOSS OF REFLECTIVITY BUT PERFORMED WELL IN WET PAVEMENT CONDITIONS. SANDBLASTING OF CONCRETE HIGHWAYS IS RECOMMENDED WHEREVER LARGE-SCALE OPERATIONS CAN MAKE THE ARRANGEMENT COST-EFFECTIVE. FOR NEW HIGHWAYS, LONGITUDINAL TEXTURING OF THE CONCRETE PAVEMENT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED BECAUSE THE ARRANGEMENT PROMISES TO IMPROVE BOTH WET-NIGHT PERFORMANCE AND PROLONG PAINT LIFE. A RECESSED RAMP REFLECTOR ARRANGEMENT IS RECOMMENDED FOR ON-OFF RAMPS AND SHOULDER DELINEATION. THE PROJECT INTRODUCES THE USE OF A TELEPHOTOMETER SYSTEM FOR OBTAINING QUANTITATIVE REFLECTIVITY HISTORIES OF PAINT STRIPS AS VIEWED FROM A MOVING VEHICLE. A GENERALLY FAVORABLE EVALUATION OF THE SYSTEM IS INCLUDED IN THIS REPORT. IT IS FELT THAT THIS PROJECT IS A MEANINGFUL AND SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE QUEST FOR AN OPTIMAL ALL-WEATHER HIGHWAY DELINEATION SYSTEM. /FHWA/
