POWER REQUIREMENTS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

AN ANALYTICAL METHOD OF DETERMINING THE POWER REQUIREMENTS OF BATTERY AND FUEL CELL SYSTEMS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE ANY DESIRED LEVEL OF VEHICLE PERFORMANCE IS PRESENTED. POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF THIS METHOD ARE ILLUSTRATED: THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF SEVERAL ENERGY SOURCES ARE CONSIDERED IN RELATION TO VEHICLE PERFORMANCE. IT IS DEMONSTRATED HOW THESE BATTERY CHARACTERISTICS CAN BE APPLIED TO THE CURVES DEVELOPED IN THE ANALYTICAL METHOD TO READILY PREDICT THE WEIGHT OF ENERGY SOURCE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE ACCEPTABLE VEHICLE PERFORMANCE. IN ADDITION, THE METHOD ILLUSTRATES HOW SUCH FACTORS AS THE STATE OF CHARGE OF THE BATTERY AND THE LOAD RESISTANCE OF THE MOTOR WILL AFFECT THE RESULTS. A METHOD OF DETERMINING AN EFFECTIVE POWER DENSITY AT ANY DESIRED LEVEL OF BATTERY DISCHARGE IS GIVEN. A COMPUTERIZED VERSION OF THE ANALYTICAL METHOD IS PRESENTED TO AID IN ITS APPLICATION TO ANY SIZE VEHICLE AND ANY PREDETERMINED PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS. /TRRL/
