EFFECT OF STUDDED TIRES ON TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION

THE PURPOSE OF THE INVESTIGATION WAS TO ESTABLISH A METHOD OF STUDYING THE INFLUENCE OF VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH STUDDED TIRES ON ACCIDENT RATE FOR A SUBSEQUENT FULL SCALE INVESTIGATION. THE AREAS WHERE THE INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED WERE THE COUNTIES OF KOPPARBERG EDALARNAN. VEARMLAND, VAESTMANLAND AND NERKE. THE INVESTIGATION TOOK PLACE FROM 2 FEBRUARY TO 11 MARCH, 1971. OF THE VEHICLES EMPLOYED 60% HAD STUDDED TIRES, 27% HAD ONLY SUMMER TIRES, AND 13% HAD OTHER TIRE EQUIPMENT. /TRRL/
