EXHAUST EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS OF HYBRID HEAT ENGINE/ELECTRIC VEHICLES

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE EXHAUST EMISSIONS OF VEHICLES OPERATED BY BATTERY/HEAT ENGINE POWERPLANT, WHICH ARE PART OF A STUDY INTO THE FEASIBILITY OF HYBRID HEAT ENGINE/ELECTRIC VEHICLES. THE EXHAUST EMISSIONS WERE DETERMINED FOR 4 TYPES OF VEHICLES: FULL- SIZE FAMILY CAR, SMALL COMMUTER CAR, DELIVERY/POSTAL VAN AND BUS. EMISSION DATA WERE COLLECTED FOR ALTERNATIVE HEAT ENGINES: THE SPARK IGNITION, DIESEL, GAS TURBINE, RANKINE CYCLE, AND THE STIRLING CYCLE ENGINES. THE DATA WERE COLLECTED FOR BOTH PART-AND FULL-LOAD OPERATING CONDITIONS. THESE DATA WERE USED TO CALCULATE THE EXHAUST EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PASSENGER CAR AND COMMUTER CAR DRIVING OVER THE FEDERAL LA-4 DRIVING CYCLE. THE EMISSION DATA FOR THE DELIVERY VAN AND BUS WERE CALCULATED OVER AN ARBITRARILY SELECTED DRIVING CYCLE. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT MARKED REDUCTIONS IN EMISSIONS CAN BE OBTAINED WITH THE SPARK IGNITION ENGINE OPERATING AT LEAN AIR-FUEL RATIOS, WHICH IS ALLOWED BY THE STEADY-STATE OPERATION CHARACTERISTIC OF THE HYBRID. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT, WITH FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS, THE GAS TURBINE AND THE DIESEL ENGINE SHOW PROMISE OF FURTHER EMISSION REDUCTIONS. /TRRL/
