AIR POLLUTION CONFERENCE: THE AUTOMOBILE

THIS CONFERENCE, SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-COLUMBIA AND BY THE MISSOURI AIR CONSERVATION COMMISSION, BROUGHT TOGETHER REPRESENTATIVES FROM INDUSTRY, ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS AND GOVERNMENT TO STUDY THE PROBLEM OF AUTOMOBILES WITH RESPECT TO AIR POLLUTION. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO REVIEW THE TECHNICAL "STATE OF THE ART" RELATING TO PROCESSES WHICH APPEAR TO OFFER FEASIBLE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR AUTOMOBILE EMISSIONS CONTROL. AREAS OF DISCUSSION INCLUDED THE AUTOMOBILE AND THE ATMOSPHERE, THE HEALTH AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION AND PLANNING ON HOW TO REDUCE IT. ALSO CONSIDERED WERE POSSIBLE MODIFICATIONS TO AUTOMOBILE ENGINES AND THE EFFECT OF MOTOR FUEL ON VEHICLE EMISSIONS. SOME SPECIFIC ALTERNATIVES SUGGESTED WERE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, STEAM AND ELECTRIC CARS, AND DIESEL AND TURBINE DRIVEN VEHICLES.
