ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF OPTIONS IN URBAN MOBILITY

THIS STUDY DEALS WITH A NUMBER OF POLICY ISSUES RANGING FROM THE COST AND EFFECTIVENESS OF ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIES OF VEHICLE EMISSION AND NOISE CONTROL TO THE SCOPE AND METHODS FOR MINIMIZING POLLUTION BY CURTAILING THE USE OF CARS. THE ISSUE OF AUTOMOTIVE POLLUTION AND NOISE CONTROL IS PLACED IN THE WIDER CONTEXT OF LONG RANGE STRATEGIES FOR URBAN MOBILITY. THE MOST PROMISING SOLUTIONS TO THESE PROBLEMS ARE LIKELY TO BE FOUND NEITHER IN MASSIVE INVESTMENT IN MORE URBAN HIGHWAYS NOR IN EXPENSIVE HIGH-CAPACITY UNDERGROUND SYSTEMS, BUT RATHER IN INNOVATIVE LOW-COST IMPROVEMENT IN EXISTING SYSTEMS, NOTABLY BUS PRIORITY SCHEMES, THE SEMI-METRO AND PUBLIC AUTOMOBILE SERVICE. /AUTHOR/
