SCHOOL PEDESTRIAN COLLISIONS: ARE PUBLIC BELIEFS JUSTIFIED?
ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENT SOURCES OF CITIZEN CONTACTS WITH A TRAFFIC ENGINEER IS THE PROBLEM OF VEHICLE-PEDESTRIAN CONFLICTS; WHEN THESE CONFLICTS INVOLVE SCHOOL CHILDREN AS PEDESTRIANS, THE CONTACTS ARE OFTEN EMOTIONALLY CHARGED. PARENTS ARE LEGITIMATELY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR CHILDREN BUT IN EXERCISING THIS CONCERN THEY OFTEN BELIEVE IN REMEDIES WHICH ARE OUT OF PROPORTION TO THE HAZARD. /AUTHOR/
