MEASUREMENTS OF THE GROUND EFFECT ON THE PROPAGATION OF TRAFFIC NOISE

DATA WITH RESPECT TO THE PROPAGATION OF TRAFFIC NOISE OVER FLAT GROUND IS ANALYSED. OVER THIRTY SEPARATE 15-MINUTE PERIODS WERE RECORDED INCLUDING SIMULTANEOUS NOISE MEASUREMENTS (RECORDED ON TAPE) AT FOUR POINTS VARYING FROM 7.5 METERS TO 60 METERS FROM THE ROAD EDGE, AND THE REGISTERING (MANUALLY BY OBSERVERS WITH PRESSURE SWITCHES WHICH FED INTO TAPE PUNCHING MACHINE) OF THE TIME, LANE SPEED AND TYPE OF EVERY PASSING VEHICLE. THE MODEL DERIVED FROM EARLIER INVESTIGATIONS WAS FOUND TO FIT THE MEASURED RESULTS FOR DISTANCES AS CLOSE AS 33 METERS FROM THE CENTER OF THE ROAD. FOR DISTANCES CLOSER THAN 20 METERS, MODIFICATION OF THE MODEL IS NECESSARY. ATTENUATION VALUES OF NOISE WITH DISTANCE FROM THE ROAD WITH VARIOUS GROUND COVER IS TABULATED. THE ATTENUATION OF TRAFFIC NOISE IS EXPRESSED AS A FALL OFF OF LEVEL WITH EACH DISTANCE DOUBLING. A COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE TRAFFIC NOISE TAPE. GRAPHS ILLUSTRATING OCTAVE BAND FREQUENCY, COMPARISON OF TRAFFIC REGISTRATION AND NOISE, EXCESS ATTENUATION IN OCTAVE BANDS OF NOISE FROM SINGLE VEHICLES, ALTENUATION OF TRAFFIC NOISE OVER SNOW COVERED GROUND, AND COMPARISON OF MEASUREMENTS WITH PREDICTED LEVELS ARE PRESENTED. DESCRIPTIONS OF THE COMPUTER SIMULATION MODEL, DEFINITIONS, AND DATA TABULATIONS, ARE INCLUDED IN APPENDICES.
