MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY: A STUDY OF DRINKING MOTORCYCLE DRIVERS

FATAL MOTORCYCLE COLLISIONS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY ARE BEING EVALUATED FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEVELOPING COUNTERMEASURES. AN ANALYSIS OF THESE COLLISIONS, PLUS THE AVAILABLE LITERATURE, HAS LED TO THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: (1) ALTHOUGH THE NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLE DRIVERS WHO HAD BEEN DRINKING WAS NOT LARGE, IT APPEARS THAT THE ABILITY TO OPERATE A MOTORCYCLE IS IMPAIRED AT A BAL LOWER THAN THE CALIFORNIA PRESUMPTIVE LEVEL OF 0.10% WEIGHT/VOLUME. (2) THE DATA AVAILABLE FROM COLLISION AND CORONER REPORTS ARE INADEQUATE FOR THE PURPOSE OF ANSWERING SEVERAL QUESTIONS WHICH HAVE ARISEN. (3) INTERSECTION, IN CONTRAST TO AVAILABLE LITERATURE, DID NOT GENERATE THE MAJORITY OF THE FATAL COLLISIONS STUDIED. (4) HEAD INJURIES, WHEN THE INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE, PROVED TO BE THE MAJOR CAUSE OF DEATH. (5) INFORMATION ON MOTORCYCLE COLLISIONS IN GENERAL AND HBD MOTORCYCLE COLLISIONS IN PARTICULAR IS LACKING AND FURTHER RESEARCH EFFORTS ARE NEEDED. /HSRI/
