BODY STYLE AND NUMBER OF CYLINDERS

THIS REPORT CONSIDERS TWO ASPECTS OF PASSENGER CARS: BODY TYPE AND ENGINE CYLINDER NUMBER. THE STUDY VARIABLES ARE CROSS-TABULATED BY VEHICLE WEIGHT, AGE AND SEX OF DRIVER, AND ACCIDENT TYPE. ANALYSIS OF THE SINGLE VARIABLE "BODY TYPE" INDICATED LARGE DIFFERENCES IN ACCIDENT SEVERITY BETWEEN VEHICLE BODY TYPES. HOWEVER, WHEN ACCIDENT SEVERITY BY VEHICLE TYPE WAS CONTROLLED FOR AGE OF DRIVER AND THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE THE DIFFERENCES IN SEVERITY BETWEEN BODY TYPES TENDED TO DISAPPEAR. ONLY THE ACCIDENT INCIDENCE RATIO OF MEN 30 TO 54 YEARS OLD WAS STUDIED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THESE ACCIDENT RATES INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY WITH THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE. MOST OF THIS INCREASE IS ASSOCIATED WITH PROPERTY DAMAGE AND INDETERMINATE INJURY ACCIDENTS. THERE IS NO PATTERN OF INCREASE WITH NUMBER OF CYLINDERS OR VEHICLE WEIGHT OF THE ACCIDENT RATE FOR FATAL, SERIOUS, OR MINOR INJURY ACCIDENTS, WITHIN A BODY TYPE. ON THE WHOLE, STATION WAGONS HAVE THE LOWEST INJURY ACCIDENT RATE, AND TWO- DOOR SEDANS HAVE THE HIGHEST.
