A DRIVING SIMULATION STUDY TO DETERMINE INFORMATION LEAD DISTANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ELECTRONIC ROUTE GUIDANCE SYSTEM

THIS REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A DRIVING SIMULATION STUDY TO DETERMINE DRIVER PERFORMANCE IN THE NEGOTIATION OF 22 SIMULATED URBAN INTERSECTIONS USING AN ELECTRONIC ROUTE GUIDANCE SYSTEM (ERGS) DESPLAY TO PRESENT ROUTING INFORMATION THROUGH THE INTERSECTIONS. THE EFFECT OF ERGS DISPLAY INFORMATION LEAD DISTANCE (ILD) UPON DRIVER PERFORMANCE, UNDER VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS WITH DRIVERS OF VARYING AGES, AND THE DETERMINATION OF OPTIMAL ILD'S FOR EACH INTERSECTION WERE THE PRIMARY STUDY CONSIDERATIONS. IN ADDITION, 12 PERFORMANCE MEASURES WERE EXAMINED FOR SUITABILITY TO ILD INVESTIGATIONS. SUBJECT DRIVERS WERE PLACED IN A REALISTIC MOVING BASE SIMULATION OF AN URBAN AUTOMOBILE DRIVING TASK AND THEIR DRIVING PERFORMANCE WAS MEASURED. ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE AND OPTIMAL ILD ANALYSES WERE CONDUCTED ON THE DATA AND ARE PRESENTED. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT DRIVER PERFORMANCE IS INFLUENCED BY ILD, BUT FEW ENVIRONMENTAL OR AGE FACTORS INTERACT WITH ILD TO INFLUENCE PERFORMANCE. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT OPTIMAL ILD IS NOT PRIMARILY A FUNCTION OF DISTANCE, BUT DEPENDS HEAVILY ON INTERVENING SIDE ROAD LOCATION AND THE TYPE OF ERGS DISPLAY MESSAGE GIVEN. RECOMMENDED OPTIMAL ILD'S ARE GIVEN IN THIS REPORT FOR 30 INTERSECTION-TRACES AND GENERAL RULES FOR OPTIMAL ILD GENERATION ARE PRESENTED. HOWEVER, THE DATA DO NOT SUPPORT THE NOTION OF A WELL DEFINED OPTIMAL ILD. /FHWA/
