AN EVALUATION OF THE TELEDYNE-GEOTECH MODEL 33300 CRASH RECORDER VOLUME II

THE REPORT CONTAINS THE RESULTS OF AN EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF AN INSTRUMENT DEVELOPED BY THE TELEDYNE-GEOTECH COMPANY FOR MEASURING AND RECORDING THE ACCELERATION ENVIRONMENT OF AUTOMOBILES INVOLVED IN COLLISIONS. THE EVALUATION WAS BASED ON LABORATORY DETERMINATIONS OF SENSITIVITY AND FREQUENCY RESPONSE CHARACTERISTICS AND ON RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS OF THE IMPACT ACCELERATIONS OF AUTOMOBILES WHICH WERE CRASH TESTED IN A VARIETY OF IMPACT SITUATIONS. THE RESULTS OF THE LABORATORY TESTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE MANUFACTURER'S PUBLISHED SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE CRASH RECORDER. ACCELERATION DATA OBTAINED BY THE CRASH RECORDERS IN THE FULL-SCALE VEHICLE TESTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE RESPONSES MEASURED WITH STRAIN GAUGE TYPE ACCELEROMETERS WHICH WERE INSTALLED ADJACENT TO THE CRASH RECORDERS FOR ALL TESTS. THE INDICATED VELOCITY CHANGE OF THE VEHICLES, AS OBTAINED FROM INTEGRATION OF THE CRASH RECORDER ACCELERATION DATA, IS ALSO COMPARED WITH THE CHANGE DETERMINED FROM INDEPENDENT VELOCITY MEASUREMENTS. /AUTHOR/
