Addressing Vulnerabilities in Transit Security: Developments Since September 11, 2001

This article reviews transit's vulnerabilities, looks at the federal vision for transit security, and discusses various protective measures and practices that have been used in transit counterterrorism. Transit agencies have worked with the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, and local partners on risk and vulnerability assessments, training and outreach, information sharing, surveillance and detection technologies, and the deployment of transit police, security personnel, and canine teams to increase their preparedness and capabilities to deter and detect terrorism. The article concludes with comments on developing security resources and increasing preparedness and capabilities.
