THE DOCUMENT GIVES AN ILLUSTRATED DESCRIPTION OF THE ESV SYSTEM DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED BY GENERAL MOTORS. BODY STRUCTURES DESIGNED TO CRUSH IN A CONTROLLED MANNER FOR EFFICIENTLY MANAGING THE FORCES OF 50 MPH BARRIER CRASHES ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. CHASSIS FEATURES DESIGNED TO MEET ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE REQUIREMENTS ARE REVIEWED IN MORE GENERAL TERMS. RATIONALES FOR SIGNIFICANT DESIGN ELEMENTS ARE PROVIDED ALONG WITH INFORMATION ON GENERAL MOTORS DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IN THE ESV PROGRAM. AN OCCUPANT PROTECTION SYSTEM THAT INCLUDES A FULLY PASSIVE PADDING SYSTEM FOR 20 MPH FRONT BARRIER IMPACTS AND AIR CUSHIONS FOR HIGHER SPEED IMPACTS IS EXPLAINED.
