America's Seaports Promote Prosperity

As primary gateways for overseas trade, U.S. seaports enable international competition for America's exports and are critical links for access to the global marketplace. They help build and grow international trade, which in turn will strengthen the national economy. Success of the nation's seaports depends on partnerships with the federal government in order to maintain healthy waterways and to ensure that highways, bridges, and railroads around the seaports operate efficiently. State and local support is also needed to maintain freight-handling systems in the area. Policies and programs need to be developed and implemented in order for America to achieve safe, sustainable, and navigable seaports that can adapt to meet ever-changing global trade demands.
