DRIVER EDUCATION FOR THE HANDICAPPED

DURING THE PAST DECADE, THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASING INTEREST AND INVESTMENT IN PROVIDING SERVICES FOR THE HANDICAPPED PERSON THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL CHILDREN IS A FIRST DUTY OF STATE GOVERNMENT. PROMINENT RECOGNITION OF DRIVER EDUCATION APPEARS IN THE STANDARDS DEVELOPED IN CONNECTION WITH THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY SAFETY ACT OF 1966. THIS FEDERAL STANDARD PROVIDES THAT EACH STATE, IN COOPERATION WITH ITS POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS, SHALL HAVE A DRIVER EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM THAT IS AVAILABLE TO ALL YOUTHS OF LICENSING AGE (INCLUDING HANDICAPPED). AS DRIVER EDUCATORS HAVE ADDRESSED THEMSELVES MORE DIRECTLY TO THE CREATION OF DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR THE HANDICAPPED STUDENT, ONE CRITICAL CONCERN HAS BEEN WHERE TO FIND AND HOW TO TRAIN TEACHERS FOR THIS TASK. THE INTENT OF THIS PUBLICATION IS TO PROVIDE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY DRIVER EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS WITH A CURRICULUM GUIDE WHICH STRESSES TEACHER PREPARATION FOR DRIVER EDUCATION FOR THE HANDICAPPED. THE SPECIFIC PURPOSE OF THIS PUBLICATION IS TO PROVIDE CURRICULUM RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN EFFECTIVE TEACHER PREPARATION COURSE OF STUDY FOR DRIVER EDUCATION FOR THE MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED. IN THIS GUIDE ELEVEN BASIC CURRICULUM UNITS ARE SUGGESTED, BUT EACH INSTRUCTOR SHOULD USE THIS AS A CONTENT GUIDE AND SELECT FROM THESE UNITS ACCORDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE IN-SERVICE OR PRE-SERVICE DRIVER EDUCATION TEACHER. /AUTHOR/
