ROAD SAFETY COMPAIGNS: DESIGN AND EVALUATION

AN ACCOUNT OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF CAMPAIGNS WITH SOME FORM OF SCIENTIFIC EVALUATION IS GIVEN. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS ARE SUMMARIZED WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON PRE-TESTING OF CERTAIN CAMPAIGN COMPONENTS. THEORIES OF ACCIDENT CAUSATION THAT DEPEND UPON THE HUMAN FACTOR FORM A VALID BASIS FOR PROMOTING RESEARCH ON IMPROVED SAFETY CAMPAIGNS. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE EFFECTIVE DESIGN OF CAMPAIGNS AND ON METHODS OF EVALUATING THEIR EFFECTIVENESS ARE MADE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT ALL MAJOR SAFETY CAMPAIGNS SHOULD BE PRE-TESTED AND SHOULD BE ACCOMPANIED BY APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. /AUTHOR/
