A THREE-DIMENSIONAL COMPUTER SIMULATION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH VICTIM. PHASE I - DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPUTER. FINAL REPORT.

A DIGITAL COMPUTER PROGRAM WHICH WILL SIMULATE IN THREE DIMENSIONS A MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH VICTIM, EITHER OCCUPANT OR PEDESTRIAN, IS CURRENTLY UNDER DEVELOPMENT. THE DYNAMICS MODEL OF FORTY-DEGREES-OF-FREEDOM CONSISTS OF FIFTEEN RIGID BODY SEGMENTS CONNECTED BY BALL-AND SOCKET AND PINNED JOINTS, AND INCLUDES SPRING AND DISSIPATIVE TORQUES AT THE JOINTS TO SIMULATE MUSCLE TONE. PROVISION IS MADE WITHIN THE FORMULATION TO ALTER THE NUMBER OF SEGMENTS AND JOINTS OF THE MODEL. A CONTACT MODEL WAS DEVELOPED TO SIMULATE EXTERNAL FORCES ACTING ON THE CRASH VICTIM, INCLUDING FORCES CAUSED BY CONTACT WITH VEHCILE SURFACES, BETWEEN BODY SEGMENTS, AND RESTRAINT FORCES FROM BOTH BELT AND INFALTABLE TYPES OF RESTRAINT SYSTEMS. A GRAPHICS DISPLAY MODEL PRODUCES ORTHOGONAL VIEWS OF THE VICTIM FROM BOTH AN OFFLINE PLOTTER GRAPHICS ROUTINE AND A SIMPLIFIED PRINTER GRAPHICS DISPLAY, DEVELOPED TO PROVIDED A MEANS FOR READILY ASSESSING THE DEGREE OF INJURY SUSTAINED BY THE SIMULATED CRASH VICTIM. A DETAILED CHECK-OUT, A VALIDATION STUDY AND EXTENSION OF THE MODELLING ARE PLANNED FOR PHASE 2 OF THIS RESEARCH. /AUTHOR/
