The Weakest Link

This article describes how the vulnerable road user, the pedestrian, is gaining importance in multimodal transport as transportation policies become implemented. As infrastructure developments mirror those in vehicle design, the emphasis on pedestrian is pushing traffic monitoring and control specialists in new directions and nowhere is this more apparent than at intersections. The article shows how pedestrian safety versus traffic signal timing efficiency has and continues to be a driving industry issue. There have been revisions to pedestrian clearance rates and timing that affect signal cycle lengths. A critical requirement of pedestrian clearance and counting, as well as meeting the requirements for the disabled, is accurate pedestrian detection. The article describes how the use of 3D imaging to detect pedestrians waiting at crossing points is a relatively recent innovation.
