GAS TURBINES PROPOSED FOR LNG SHIPS AND ELECTRIC-DRIVE TANKERS

General Electrics family of heavy duty industrial-type marine gas turbines are considered as dual fuel ( gas/fuel oil ) machinery for the propulsion of LNG tankers and gas turbine/electric-drive installations. Units intended for mechanical ( i.e., geared ) drive are all normally two-shaft machines in which the axial-flow compressor is driven from a turbine mechanically separated from the power output turbine. If electric drive is required, as for the North West Passage tankers, then a single-shaft machine suited for electrical power generation would be offered. Most of the GE machines are available in permutations of single-shaft/ double-shaft/regenerative/simple cycle, as required. Suitability for various ship types is discussed.
