Balance of Lanes Impacting Traffic Operation in Merging Area of Expressway On-Ramp
Traffic operation characteristics in merging areas of on-ramps are first analyzed based on traffic flow Basic Graphics, which is classified into 7 types. Then, traffic flow characteristics including flow-occupancy, flow-speed graphics and speed-occupancy time series plot under two states, that is, state of balanced lane and that of imbalanced lane, are distinctly studied. The analyzed results show that traffic capacity amplifies when the expressway on-ramp merging area takes lane balance, with traffic condition more stable and more controllable, providing preferences for related traffic design and management.
