REPORT ON FORMATION OF SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON CAUSES AND PREVENTION OF HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS

IN RECOMMENDING THE FORMATION OF A COMMITTEE OF THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD TO DEAL WITH HIGHWAY SAFETY, SOME OF THE FACTORS UPON WHICH SAFE TRAVEL DEPENDS AND SOME PROBLEMS IN NEED OF TECHNICAL RESEARCH ARE DISCUSSED. SURFACE CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE SLIPPERINESS, SUPER-ELEVATION AND RADII OF CURVES, VISIBILITY, AND SIGNS AND SIGNALS ARE SOME FEATURES OF HIGHWAY DESIGN THAT NEED STUDY. THE MECHANICS OF DRIVING, THE METHODS FOR PRODUCING VISIBILITY AT NIGHT, AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DRIVERS ARE ALSO IMPORTANT SUBJECTS FOR STUDY.
