STATISTICAL ESTIMATION AND ACCIDENT PRONENESS

THE FIRST PART CONSISTS OF A REPORT ON MATHEMATICAL ATTEMPTS TO DESCRIBE ACCIDENT PRONENESS AND CALLS ATTENTION TO CERTAIN BASIC PROBLEMS WHICH HAVE IN GENERAL BEEN NEGLECTED. USING NEW DEFINITIONS WHICH ARE APPARENTLY NECESSARY, THE PAPER RECAPITULATES THE PRINCIPAL RESULTS OF THE MEAN TIME INTERVAL MODEL WHICH ATTEMPTS TO ESTIMATE INDIVIDUAL RESISTANCE TO ACCIDENTS BY USING THE MEAN TIME INTERVAL BETWEEN CONSECUTIVE ACCIDENTS DURING A FIXED OBSERVATION PERIOD. IT IS THEN PROPOSED TO ESTIMATE A PARAMETER CHARACTERIZING THE RESISTANCE AND AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO SEE TO WHAT EXTENT THE MODEL CAN BE IMPROVED BY THE INTRODUCTION OF THE DEGREE OF RESPONSIBILITY AND OF THE COST OF THE ACCIDENT. /AUTHOR/
