The analysis of the marine turbogenerator installation cost effectiveness

This paper presents the results of a simulation of and research into the cost effectiveness of mounting a turbogenerator on board a ship. The Konsberg NorControl crude oil carrier engine room plant was used in order to simulate electrical power generation with a turbogenerator, as well as with a diesel one. A questionnaire was used to conduct a cost analysis, in which the exhaust gas boiler manufacturers, as well as turbo generator and diesel generator suppliers were surveyed. Current heavy fuel oil and diesel oil prices on the world market were used for the bunker price calculations, and fuel savings were calculated by comparing the electrical power production situation with two diesel generators and the situation when a turbo generator was paralleled with a shaft generator. Additional verification of the results was provided by using a computer program for economic prediction. The thesis that mounting the turbogenerator on board a ship has great benefits, and should subsequently be used as much as possible, has arguably been confirmed by the results. Also confirmed is the great influence of planning the bunkering (choosing the bunkering ports), as well as the relevance to the final exploitation costs of engine plant optimization and exploitation optimization.
