EFFECT OF PAVEMENT EDGE MARKING ON TWO-LANE RURAL STATE HIGHWAYS IN OHIO

A PROGRAM WAS INITIATED FOR MARKING PAVEMENT EDGES ON ALL TWO-LANE RURAL STATE HIGHWAYS. BEFORE AND AFTER STUDIES ON ALL ACCIDENTS REPORTED WERE INVESTIGATED. RESULTS WERE GRATIFYING. FOR EXAMPLE, THERE WAS A 37% REDUCTION IN FATALITIES AND INJURIES ATTRIBUTABLE TO EDGE MARKING, A REDUCTION IN NIGHT ACCIDENTS AND FEWER ACCIDENTS AT INTERSECTIONS, ALLEYS, AND DRIVEWAYS.
