THIS PAPER IS IN THREE PARTS. THE FIRST, BY CROWTHER, DEALS WITH THE DESIGN OF THE MASTS THEMSELVES. HEIGHTS AT PRESENT ARE USUALLY BETWEEN 60 FT AND 120 FT. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF WIND VELOCITIES, LOAD FACTOR, COLUMN DEFLECTION, AND WIND EXCITATION. APPEARANCE DESIGN OF MASTS AND LANTERN CLUSTERS IS A SOURCE OF CONTROVERSY. RAISING AND LOWERING GEAR AND MAINTENANCE GENERALLY ARE DISCUSSED. PART II, BY JORDAN, IS ON LIGHTING DESIGN.
