COMPARISON OF MARINE PROPULSION PLANTS WITH TWO-STROKE CROSSHEAD ENGINES AND WITH GEARED MEDIUM-SPEED ENGINES

Diesel propulsion plants with unit outputs between 30,000 and 60,000 shp are examined for use in tankers and bulk carriers of increasing size and container vessels with increasing speeds. Factors considered are -- engineroom parameters, hull form and draft, propeller type, and auxiliary machinery to be driven. MANs development of two-stroke cross-head and geared medium speed diesels for marine use is reviewed. The effect of the type of propulsion plant selected on purchasing price and operating economy of a container vessel is analyzed.
