APPLICATION OF MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT STATISTICS TO HIGHWAY PLANNING AND DESIGN IN ONTARIO

THE DETAILS CONTAINED IN ACCIDENT REPORTS ARE CLOSELY STUDIED, RECORDED AND FILED BY HIGHWAY LOCATION WHICH FACILITATES THE APPLICATION OF ACCIDENT STATISTICS IN TRAFFIC ENGINEERING STUDIES TO THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF HIGHWAYS ETC. THE ACCIDENT PRONE LOCATIONS ARE DETERMINED. THE PREDOMINANT TYPE OF ACCIDENT IS OFTEN AN INDICATION OF FAULT OR FAULTS IN DESIGN WHICH ARE CAUSING THE ACCIDENTS. REFERENCE TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENT STATISTICS IS MADE IN DETERMINING: THE DESIGN OR CHANGE IN THE DESIGN OF INTERSECTION AND TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES, AND NEED FOR CHANGES IN THE SPEED ON CERTAIN HIGHWAYS, ROADS AND STREETS ACCIDENT RATES COMPUTED FOR CONTROLLED ACCESS HIGHWAYS ARE AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF THE SUPERIORITY OF FACTS OVER THEORIES. THE DEPT. IS ALSO CONSTANTLY CARRYING OUT STUDIES CONCERNING SKIDDING AND SWERVING ACCIDENTS, COLLISIONS WITH GUIDE RAILS AND CENTER PIERS OR SIDE ABUTMENTS, AND ACCIDENTS INVOLVING PEDESTRIANS, TRAINS, SCHOOL BUSES ETC. /CGRA/
