THE EVALUATION OF A RANGE OF VIBRATING ROLLERS IN COMPACTING ROAD MATERIALS

EARLY STUDIES BY THE AUSTRALIAN ROAD RESEARCH BOARD ON THE ASSESSMENT OF ROLLERS IN COMPACTING SUBGRADE AND PAVEMENT MATERIALS WERE CONFINED MAINLY TO A LITERATURE REVIEW AND A SUPPLEMENT BUT IT WAS APPARENT THAT MORE INFORMATION WAS REQUIRED, PARTICULARLY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF VIBRATING ROLLERS. A PROPOSAL PUT FORWARD TO THE BOARD'S TWO COMPACTION COMMITTEES COVERED THE TESTING OF FIVE SMOOTH DRUM TOWED TYPE VIBRATING ROLLERS AND ONE SMOOTH DRUM NON-VIBRATING ROLLER, TO BE TESTED ON FIVE ROAD MATERIALS OVER A RANGE OF MOISTURE CONTENTS EXTENDING FROM DRY TO WET OF OPTIMUM. THE TESTING WAS CARRIED OUT IN A SHED BUILT BY THE HIGHWAYS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA. THIS REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS ACHIEVED WITH THE ROLLERS SELECTED ON THREE MATERIALS, AND CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN AS TO THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ROLLER VARIABLES ON COHESIONLESS SOILS. THE IMPORTANCE OF MOISTURE CONTROL, IF HIGH DENSITIES ARE TO BE ACHIEVED WITH VIBRATING UNITS, IS DEMONSTRATED. /AUTHOR/
