THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF TANKERS EQUIPPED WITH IMPERMEABLE MEMBRANES TO REDUCE OIL POLLUTION

The preliminary design of four tankers to be equipped with impermeable membranes to isolate cargo oil from sea water ballast are examined. Two tanker each of 250,000 DWT and 50,000 DWT are presented. A new tanker design using the membrane system to best advantage is presented for each of the two sizes. The modification of existing tankers, one each of the two sizes, is also examined. Design criteria as they relate to arrangement and scantlings are discussed and an estimate of the weight and cost of each tanker is included.
