REPAVER MELTS NEW HOT MIX INTO OLD SURFACE

A THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD ASPHALTIC PAVEMENT WAS DEWRINKLED AND BUILT-UP USING A HEATING AND SHAVING PROCESS. IN THE PROCESS THE ROUGHNESS THAT DEVELOPS IN OLD ASPHALTIC SURFACES WAS IRONED OUT, THE AGGREGATES WERE CONSERVED, AND SOFTENED CRUST TOP WAS BLENDED INTO THE UNDERLYING MATERIAL TO FORM A HOMOGENOUS PAVEMENT WITHOUT LAMINATIONS. THE 48-FT-LONG, 65,000 LB., SELF- PROPELLED REPAVER TRAVELLING AT 12 FPM MADE A 12-FT- WIDE PASS, WHILE THE OTHER LANE WAS USED FOR ASPHALT DELIVERY. THE OPERATION OF THE MACHINE IS DETAILED. THE OPERATION OF THE WIDE PAVER WHICH PLACED 32 FT. WIDE BINDER MIX AND 28 FT. WIDE SURFACE MIX ARE DESCRIBED. THE SHOULDER BUILDUP CONSISTED OF A PRISM WHICH OVERLAPPED THE 32-FT BINDER LAYER, MATCHING THE SURFACE LAYER. THE JOB SEQUENCE CALLS FOR THE REPAVER TO COMPLTE ITS SECTION FIRST LEAVING THE REST CLEAR FOR THE CONVENTIONAL PAVERS. THE PROJECT IS DUE FOR COMPLETION AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.
