CALIFORNIA'S BRIDGE EXPANSION PROBLEMS

DISCUSSION IS MADE ON THE MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS IN CONNECTION WITH DECK EXPANSION JOINTS, EXPANSION BEARINGS AND HINGES THAT ARE USED ON BRIDGES HAVING SPAN LENGTHS UP TO 120 FEET. TYPES OF SUCH EXPANSION ASSEMBLIES USED IN THE PAST ARE REVIEWED, THEIR PERFORMANCE STUDIED AND THE METHODS USED IN REPAIRING DEFECTS OUTLINED. FROM THE EXPERIENCE GAINED WITH THESE EARLIER EXPANSION ASSEMBLIES, IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE AND THE TYPES CURRENTLY IN USE ARE DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
