PROGRESS REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON MAINTENANCE COSTS; COST TRENDS 1935-1947

YEARLY MAINTENANCE COSTS ARE MEASURED BY LABOR, MATERIAL, EQUIPMENT, AND OVERHEAD ON A REPRESENTATIVE 10,000 MILES OF HIGHWAY. COST TRENDS ARE ESTABLISHED USING 1935 AS A BASE. THE 1947 COST OF OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE IS 71% HIGHER THAN THE 1935 COST, OR 98, 46, 53, AND 62% HIGHER, RESPECTIVELY FOR LABOR, MATERIAL, EQUIPMENT, AND OVERHEAD. THUS MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS WHICH COST $402.82 PER MILE IN 1935, REQUIRE $689.96 PER MILE IN 1947. /AUTHOR/
