MAINTENANCE COSTS AS AFFECTED BY TYPE OF PAVEMENT AND AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC

THE AVERAGE ANNUAL MAINTENANCE COSTS OF 18 TYPES OF SURFACE IN PENNSYLVANIA FOR THE YEARS 1924-1927 INCLUSIVE ARE GIVEN. THESE DATA SUBSTANTIATE THE GENERAL BELIEF THAT THE HIGHER TYPES OF PAVEMENTS HAVE THE LOWER MAINTENANCE COSTS. A TABULATION OF MAINTENANCE COSTS ON 9,752 MILES OF PAVEMENT INCLUDING EIGHT SURFACE TYPES FOR 1923 SHOWS SOME INTERESTING RELATIONS BETWEEN TYPE OF SURFACE, AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC, MAINTENANCE COST PER MILE AND MAINTENANCE COST PER CAR MILE.
