Optimizing Flight Departure Delay and Route Selection under En Route Convection Weather

Airline flights can be delayed or rerouted due to convective weather. Decision support tools have been developed for air traffic flow management and can be used by airlines in determining priorities for departure delays and re-routes. A software tool is described which selects departure times that identifies trajectories where weather delays will not be a factor. Flight paths unaffected by weather adhere to their original schedules and routes. This paper analyzes the performance of a priority-based scheduling algorithm with an integer-programming (IP) model. The algorithm features simplicity and computational speed while the IP model has potential efficiency and optimization gains.
