CAUSES AND CURE OF FROST BOILS

IT IS SHOWN THAT THE EXCESSIVE WINTERTIME HEAVING PREVALENT IN SOME LOCALITIES CANNOT BE CAUSED SIMPLY BY THE EXPANSION OF THE WATER ON FREEZING. FROST BOILS ARE CAUSED BY THE TRANSFER OF WATER TO A LOCATION IN WHICH THE SOIL IS ALREADY FROZEN AND AT WHICH THIS WATER THEN FREEZES, THUS BUILDING UP THE AMOUNT OF WATER IN A GIVEN PLACE TO AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT. THE SITUATION CAN BE IMPROVED BY DRAINAGE.
